Psychosocial care

Psychosocial care

Although the vast majority of children with cancer can now be successfully treated, the diagnosis and subsequent treatment has a profound impact on the child and family. They may cause significant distress and confusion which may persist over time, even after the completion of treatment.

For service providers, the challenge is to effectively support and build on the child and family’s strengths and resiliencies and to assist them to manage the physical, practical and emotional demands placed on them. In 2006, PICS commissioned and completed a Psychosocial Services Project. This initiative resulted in the development of a Service Model, Standards of Practice and an Implementation Plan for the provision of psychosocial support for children and adolescents with cancer and their families.
