Paediatric Surgical Oncology

Paediatric Surgical Oncology

In 2008, PICS in collaboration with the surgical units at the Royal Children’s Hospital and Monash Medical Centre, Southern Health recognised a need for improved surgical services for children with cancer. The Cancer and Palliative Care Unit within the Department of Health provided funding for an initial scoping exercise to better understand the issues and identify opportunities for improvement.

Completed in December 2008, the scoping report highlights a number of significant organisational and clinical opportunities to improve the quality and coordination of care. Best practice principles have been developed in collaboration with surgical and oncology health care providers. Further funding has been allocated by the Department of Health to employ a Project Officer to implement the recommendations from the Paediatric Surgical Oncology Program (PSOP) Report in 2010.
